Veden is right, the max amount of gold obtainable (214,748 gold, 36 silver, 48 copper) is exactly the max number of a signed long integer in most (maybe all? I don't know) cases. No idea why they would go with signed vs. unsigned. Maybe they thought one day they'd implement something that allowed you to go negative, like a loan from the bank, and they figured that 214k was a reasonable max limit.
